November in Domancy (not Dormancy)

Since moving to the French Alps near Chamonix in May 2015, everyone has been asking --What is so great about the Alps? Why not Paris? Where are you exactly? One of my sarcastic Boston friends said, "Oh you live in Dormancy, not much going on, eh? " Domancy is a sleepy rural French town in the Alps, population 2,040 in the Mont Blanc Massif valley. After living in Boston, it's quite an adjustment, but I'm getting quite used to it. Like the sound of birds waking us, or horses neighing, instead of car alarms or horns blaring in Boston.

We've adjusted by getting mountain bikes, dusting off our tennis rackets, buying snowshoes, and getting outside. I even had my first experience whitewater rafting, which was one of the best natural "highs" I ever had. We are also trying to become more "green" in our lifestyle choices. We dry our clothes outdoors, drive an electric car, and eat either local or organic whenever possible.

I can say one of the best things about where we are is that we are so centrally located. We are 5 minutes from the highway to the Mont Blanc Tunnel through to Aosta, Italy, a mere 30 minutes away. Or a quick jaunt to Geneva, Switzerland is only 45 minutes away. In France, we are only 20 minutes from Chamonix and Megève, the world-renowned ski resorts. We went to Milan two years ago, and to Vevey to see Charlie Chaplin's World, and hopped a flight to Killarney, Ireland recently, so we're taking full advantage of our location. We hope you come see us soon!
